Behind The Mask

Earlier in the year the Aldergrove Kodiaks traded away rookie goaltender Naythan Lange in exchange for a veteran goaltender 38 Cole Forbes. Forbes had spent the previous season in Langley with the Knights, a new team who was struggling to find success. Cole started the season with the Knights and was facing an average of 50 shots per night he posted a 2-9-0-0 record with a GAA of 6.31 and a SV% of .870.

In the 13 games Cole has played since coming to the Kodiaks he has a 8-3-0-1 record with a 3.16 GAA and a SV% of .895, making this Forbes most successful performance to date. Not only did the trade improve Forbes play but also gave him a chance to play in more competitive games with his eyes on the playoffs.

Q: What was it like coming from a struggling team, to a team that had secured a playoff spot?

Forbes: It was a nice change of pace, you could tell that everybody here wanted to win game in and game out. [It was a] much more positive atmosphere.

Q: You are a veteran goalie in the league and you share the crease with rookie Dawson Rodin; do you two help each other out in practice? Is there anything you’ve been able to learn from him?

Forbes: Rodin and I have a solid relationship and definitely help each other become better, more well rounded goaltenders.

And it shows as Rodin is having a successful rookie year going 7-6-0-0 with a 3.43 GAA and a 3.74 SV% in 16 games. Both goalies share a “never say die” quality as they both use their athleticism to sprawl across the crease and make highlight reel saves.

Q: It can be hard coming to a new team especially later in the season. Is there any one player who made you feel especially welcome?

Forbes: I had already known Callegari, Pollock, Unger, and Rodin so the transition was a pretty smooth one.

Q: You are new to the Kodiaks Vs. Pilots rivalry. What is it like playing in those games?

Forbes: They are definitely some of the most intense games I have been involved in.

Q: What is it like going from facing an average of 50 plus shots per game to now where you face around 30 shots per game?

Forbes: It’s a change of pace that is definitely welcomed. The 50 plus shots would get me into the game but it was draining at the same time.

Q: What lead to the decision to play goalie? Have you always wanted to be a goalie?

Forbes: I split time being a goalie the year before atom and decided to try out for rep as a goalie and made the A1 team and stuck with it ever since.

Q: How excited are you to play in the playoffs with a team that has seen success in the post season?

Forbes: It’s a great opportunity, I think that we have a lot of potential going in and some might view us as underdogs which is to our advantage.

With a few games left in the season the Kodiaks have locked up a playoff spot, with a win tonight the Kodiaks will clinch 3rd place.
