Interview With Josh Pollock

20 Jan 2016 by Liam McClurg

Earlier today I had a conversation with Kodiaks centre 17 Josh Pollock, to take about the season, newcomers, and recent success.

Q: You’ve been on quite a tear lately picking up 12 points in your last 10 games, as well as points in 4 straight games. What can you attribute to this offensive surge?

Pollock: I’ve just been doing what our coaches have been asking. Shooting the puck from everywhere inside the blueline, no hesitation and capitalizing on my second chances.

Q: The team is a fairly young one this year with 5 of 7 defenders in their first year in the PJHL, how impressed have you been with their ability to step up and shut down some of the opponents top lines?

Pollock: Our defence have for sure exceeded everyones expectations this season. They have all stepped up and realized the struggle they have as player in the league. They still have tough games though, but when it’s time to get to work, they all show up and give their best efforts. That’s all we can ask of them.

Q: Where did the decision come from to have Leroux and Callegari split the captaincy come from? Was that chosen by coaches or by the players?

Pollock: It was a coaching decision. The team, us the players do not disagree with the decision. Leroux and Callegari are great leaders on and off the ice and give it their all every time they step on the ice. So having two captains instead of one just makes perfect sense for our team.

Q: Is there any player in particular who has surprised you and kinda became an unsung hero?

Pollock: I would have to say both of our goalies. Dawson Rodin and Cole Forbes. They have stolen a couple games we should have lost this year and they will continue to do the same for the remainder of the season.

Q: You guys have been on a bit of a skid, is there anything different about the way you prepare for a game on a losing streak?

Pollock: At this point in the year at the position we are in we shouldn’t have to focus more than any other game. We just need to put our nose to the grindstone and get all the bad habits out of our system now. So when we go into the playoffs we are ready to go at the top of our game.

Q: You used to play for Mission what is it like when you face off against your old team?

Pollock: Well I learned the hard way. When I was traded from Mission to Aldergrove in my first year in the league I focused all day and thought about it all week about playing my old team. But when it came time to play I was too focused, too amped up and I ended up having a bad game. So now back in Aldergrove, every time we play Mission it’s just another game, just another 4 point game, against a rival team. But at the end of the day when I score, make a big hit, or beat them; it is just that much sweeter.
